Samsung to set up joint LED venture
Samsung Electronics is to set up a joint LED venture with component manufacturing
affiliate Samsung Electro-Mechanics to boost its presence in the green lighting market.
According to the firm, the global LED market is expected to grow by about 20 per cent annually over
the next five years, from $5.2 billion in 2009 to $12.7 billion in 2013.
It is thought that the venture will be named Samsung LED and will focus on the businesses in the area
of lighting and backlit units used in displays.
The firm said: "As the manufacturing process for LEDs is similar to that of semiconductors, the joint
venture would benefit from Samsung Electro-Mechanics LED technology and Samsung Electronics
chip making capabilities."
Earlier this week, Luminus Devices unveiled a new nine millimetre squared white LED which it claims
is capable of emitting 1,000 lumens at ten watts.
According to the firm, the large-chip CST-90 white PhlatLight LED is intended to replace bulbs and LED
arrays with just a single device, resulting in simplified design, lower costs and a faster time to market
